On Wednesday, LUNIQ had the unique opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring HMS Queen Elizabeth departing from Portsmouth for the first time since her global mission. The event was a magnificent display of the sheer size and power of this Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is a mammoth vessel, measuring 280 metres in length, weighing 65,000 tonnes, and capable of reaching a top speed of 25+ knots. It is the largest and most powerful ship ever constructed for the Royal Navy, capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft.
While boasting state-of-the-art weapons systems, the aircraft carrier’s primary function is to transport air power around the world. It can carry up to 40 aircraft, with F35 jets capable of being moved from hangar to deck in under a minute.
Apart from being a powerful deterrent and a symbol of British influence, HMS Queen Elizabeth will replace HMS Ocean as the Royal Navy’s Fleet Flagship. As the principal ship of the Fleet, it will carry senior naval staff, receive foreign dignitaries, and serve as a command and control centre for the entire Royal Navy.
“We return to sea today as the United Kingdom’s Very High Readiness Strike Carrier for routine operational activity and training.”
Captain Ian Feasey Royal Navy
Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth
The experience of witnessing the departure of such a magnificent vessel from Portsmouth harbour was an unforgettable one for LUNIQ. The sheer size and power of HMS Queen Elizabeth left a lasting impression on the LUNIQ team.
